Firewagon Hockey

Many people know that the term firewagon hockey best describes the play of the 1980s but I dont believe the term was invented then. That style of hockey was played in the 40s and 50s when legends like Maurice Richard and Gordie Howe stole the show with there offensive talents. The Montreal Canadiens were the best example of early firewagon hockey setting new records and scoring goals like never before. But does anyone out there know where the term "Firewagon hockey" actually comes from. Who was the first to use it?

Hockey Quote of the Day

A few words of wisdom from Fred Shero that turned the 1970s Phialdelphia Flyers into the Broad Street Bullies " Go everywhere after the puck. Never back up if you can help it. Arrive first, and in ill humour."

Firewagon Hockey

Here is the perfect example of the type of words I am looking for and that i could use a little help on. Firewagon Hockey. Those of us who know hockey realize that it means a certain style of hockey that has everything to do with offense and little attention paid to defense. It was started in the 1950's by the Montreal Canadiens and other teams like Detroit known for their high scoring talents and was more widely used to define the style of play during the 1980s.

But what i want to know is where the term Firewagon comes from and what the heck does it mean exactly. In my mind i am picturing a bunch of prairie settlers running for their lives out of a burning wagon. Please tell me I am wrong!!!!!

Cheers,

All Star History

The first official all-star game was held during the 1947-48 season and since then has been an annual tradition in the NHL. The first unofficial all-star game was played between the stars of the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association on January 2nd, 1908 to benefit the family of Montreal Wanderers players Hod Stuart who had drowned three months after his Wanderers had won the Stanley Cup.

The first unofficial NHL all star game was held in 1934 to benefit Toronto Maple Leafs star Ace Bailey after he was forced to retire prematurely because of a head injury sustained from a vicious check by Boston Bruins Eddie Shore. The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the NHL All Stars by a final score of 7-3.

The first official all star game was held at Maple Leaf Gardens in October of 1947.

Hockey Language

Remember if you have any terms or phrases of your own, please post them here and they might end up in a book that I am working on.

"Souray blasted a howitzer from the hash marks!" translation "Souray shot the puck really really hard from the line of the face-off circle." Isn't hockey language great. I will be back with more terms for sure. Please send your examples.

Cheers

Where are Les Glorieux?

Well, the habs lost another last night against their former coach Alain Vigneault and the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 4-0. Head coach Guy Carbonneau is certainly not a happy man at the way his team has been playing so much so that during an interview after their 2-0 loss against Detroit Carbonneau told the media if he and assistant coach Kirk Muller could get on the ice they would. And let me tell you he would make a difference!!

Solutions? Well I dont have any. But i do have dislikes. Alex Kovalev is a spoiled little boy and has not looked effective for many years. Michael Ryder please just stop falling down and plant yourself in front of the net where you should be. Sergei Samsonov I want you to stop stick handling, no Sergei I said stop stickhandling, oh damn there he goes again circling the net with the puck, Sergei!!! Shoot please!!

Anyway all is not lost just yet, dont panic. Just look at the way the Senators have turned around their season. Although Mr. Gainey might I suggest taking a peak around the league for some an able bodied player who likes to skate.

Go Habs!

Opening Bully

Example of Hockey terms that you might not know. Back in the early days of hockey a faceoff was called a bully. Then it switched to "face" the puck then finally graduated to a face-off.

Looking for hockey terms

Hey all out there in the hockey world. I am working on a book to be title How to Speak Hockey. I hve been searching countless texts for terms and definitions on hockey and have found a many interesting items (wait for the book) But as I have recently come to find out that there are many different ways to speak about hockey. Often terms used in hockey can mean different things simply because of where you live. Being from Montreal I am acutely aware of the fact that language changes the meaning ofsometimes common words.
So if you have any words, phrases, definitions, or just interesting points on how to speak hockey. Lets talk and when the book is published I can send off a copy.

Thanks
