The first official all-star game was held during the 1947-48 season and since then has been an annual tradition in the NHL. The first unofficial all-star game was played between the stars of the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association on January 2nd, 1908 to benefit the family of Montreal Wanderers players Hod Stuart who had drowned three months after his Wanderers had won the Stanley Cup.
The first unofficial NHL all star game was held in 1934 to benefit Toronto Maple Leafs star Ace Bailey after he was forced to retire prematurely because of a head injury sustained from a vicious check by Boston Bruins Eddie Shore. The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the NHL All Stars by a final score of 7-3.
The first official all star game was held at Maple Leaf Gardens in October of 1947.
